Maja called her delicate creation of silver wire and lapis lazuli pearls Triton’s Conch Shell, creating a breathtaking deep blue in the ring’s circle. She explains: “Poseidon’s messenger Triton cruises throughout his father’s kingdom to deliver messages to the sailors. He travels on the backs of sea creatures, rides on the waves and announces messages through his conch shells. By blowing the horn, Triton can calm the waves of the sea.”
In the 54. Deutscher Schmuck- und Edelsteinpreis (German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones) gemstone design had first priority. A artists were asked to apply with unmounted gemstones, gemstones in finished jewellery (in this case only precious metals were allowed), gemstone objects or gemstone sculptures, within the theme “Ledgends”. The Deutscher Schmuck- und Edelsteinpreis is organized by the Bundesverband der Edelstein- und Diamantindustrie (Federal Association of the Precious Stones and Diamond Industry) in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
Award
The ring Triton’s Horn was awarded wit a special mention, existing in a certificate and a cash prize. Juror Natalie Ruppenthal-Völker praised the technically difficult but nevertheless uncompromisingly successful implementation of the competition theme, in which gemstones were entwined in a delicate meshwork, creating a very wearable ring that nestles on the finger. The jury decided unanimously.
